The Home of Carlsberg Brewery in Denmark offers a multi-sensory journey through brewing heritage, science, and storytelling. Set in the original Carlsberg brewery, founded in 1847 by Jacob Christian Jacobsen, this immersive museum experience—designed by Event—unfolds in a series of themed chapters: The Welcome, The Pioneers, The Mission, The Story, The Science, The Reach, The Probably Mindset and The Serve (located in The Old Brewhouse). Our lighting design plays a crucial role in shaping the atmosphere, reinforcing Carlsberg’s rich history while enhancing visitor engagement.
In The Probably Mindset, lighting amplifies the industrial aesthetic while guiding movement. High-level wayfinding lighting directs visitors along walkways, suspended pendants maintain historical cohesion, and linear fittings mirror the AV design, casting synchronised projections onto the ceiling. Warm tones echo the wooden interiors and Carlsberg’s golden glow, creating an inviting ambiance. Light projections bring the original boiler furnaces to life, simulating their historical function, while smart lighting controls synchronise with AV for a dynamic, immersive effect.
In The Science, a contrast of dim ambient lighting and targeted spotlights highlights heritage artefacts and Carlsberg’s scientific breakthroughs. Interactive hop leaf projections form part of a life-sized AV game, reinforcing the educational and experiential elements. Meanwhile, in The Reach, an AV-lit walkway leads visitors through Carlsberg’s global brand story, with aligned spotlights marking key engagement points for seamless interaction with the narrative.
In The Pioneers, lighting and AV storytelling work in perfect synchrony. A sequenced lighting scheme, mapped to the AV playbook, directs visitors through Carlsberg’s legacy, illuminating staircases and naturally leading them through the experience. One of the most striking moments in The Mission is the projection of golden words symbolising Carlsberg’s heritage, casting dramatic shadows across the floor. A central point-source light installation amplifies this effect, extending the text across surrounding walls to create a compelling visual representation of Carlsberg’s impact.
The journey concludes in The Old Brewhouse, where subtle lighting enhances historical features while respecting the integrity of the space. Retrofitted spotlights highlight industrial elements such as brewing tanks, balancing modern enhancement with heritage preservation.
Throughout the exhibition, transition spaces use lighting to reinforce brand identity and narrative flow. The signature Carlsberg green is projected onto walls, while dynamic water simulations mimic the brewing process, adding movement and depth. Every lighting element has been carefully considered to inject historical character while aligning seamlessly with the experience design by Event.
From heritage accent lighting to synchronised AV integration, our work at Home of Carlsberg highlights the transformative role of lighting in storytelling—creating a visually rich and immersive journey where history is vividly illuminated. More than just illumination, lighting serves as a narrative tool, reinforcing the building’s historic journey while guiding visitors on a path of discovery.
