With this project we ignored the showbiz adage, “Never work with children or animals”. Yes, we know we’re not Hollywood but still, it’s a saying that (sometimes) can’t be ignored. Feeling safe that penguin Pete wouldn’t give us any bother we started work on the architectural lighting design for the American brand’s retail store in London’s Westfield Stratford shopping centre.
We used several bespoke pendant luminaires that incorporated low-energy lighting: they livened up the space and provided background illumination to the classic merchandise. Low energy wasn’t the only thing the brief required – the lighting scheme had to be as environmentally low impact as possible.
The bespoke luminaires were manufactured from 100% recycled aluminium and glass (lamps excluded). These materials were chosen because they’re relatively low impact, but still look great in a retail environment. And, when their life comes to an end, they can be easily recycled.
