The Westin has opened its debut UK hotel along the banks of the River Thames in London and boasts iconic riverside views, as well as 5-star luxury throughout. We developed a subtle and calming lighting scheme designed to echo the central theme of the hotel – wellbeing.
The entrance lobby, aptly named The Haven, spans three floors, and is basked in natural light. Track lighting around three sides of the atrium is angled to enhance a spectacular suspended paper installation that casts a dappled silhouette on the fourth grey wall, instilling tranquillity.
The lighting arrangement in the 222 guestrooms incorporates a series of integrated lighting details designed to emit a soft glow around features including the headboard. An emphasis on balancing layers of light has been used in the suites, with cove lighting employed to interact with decorative pendants and lamps. All lighting is controlled by a dimming rotary dial, giving guests control of their own lighting levels, allowing them to set the lighting scene.
Throughout the Hithe + Seek riverside bar, a series of spotlights fitted to adjustable rods sit within the confines of the curved wooden ceiling. Each light can be moved and positioned to shine a soft halo of light onto the tables if they are ever moved within the space. An array of joinery lighting highlights different aspects of the room, including the bar and decorative Champagne coves.
Focussing on wellness – the Heavenly Spa by Westin embodies a calming atmosphere, created with the use of warm lighting in the reception’s ceiling cove and shelving. The swimming pool area has minimal downlighting, with horizontal linear grazes of light and recessed illuminated niches casting indirect light onto relaxing guests.
