It’s not often that you receive a design brief inspired by the ‘Glory Days of the Orient Express’, so when the team at Adẹ̀kọ́ & Co Studio invited us to design a lighting scheme for their Zimmer + Rohde Bedroom Suite at WOW!House 2024, we jumped right on board.
Curated by the team at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, Wow!House is an annual showcase and sees the Design Avenue come to life with 19 inspirational interior and outdoor sets. The sets are brimming with imaginative ideas and trends from world-class designers and each one is produced in partnership with globally renowned brands and suppliers.
Adẹ̀kọ́ & Co Studio’s vibrant bedroom concept was envisaged by Creative Director Tolù Adẹ̀kọ́ and inspired by the fabric brand’s 125-year strong archive. The team used the space to encapsulate the richness and glamour of the illustrious train, and our lighting design reinforces the creative vision by enhancing both the material palette and ambience.
We integrated tuneable white light fittings in an elaborate coffer ceiling, finished with a faux vellum and hand-painted mahogany. Drawing on the combined expertise of Lightgraphix, Atrium and Casambi, we were able to create a dynamic lighting system that emulates the shifting tones and patterns of daylight. Beautifully nuanced and ever evolving, the scheme transitions between warm and cool light to subtly reference the perpetual motion of the world-famous train.
Elsewhere in the bedroom, we used discreet layers of light to show the materials in their best light and inject a touch of drama. Uplights wash light onto the textured surface behind the bespoke screens and headboard to accentuate the intricacy of Zimmer + Rohde’s textured moiré panelled walls and velvet curtains. A bespoke fireplace embellished with special finishes becomes a distinctive focal point and combines with a discreet layer of light under the bespoke, 20th-century inspired vanity table, to bring a soft, warm glow to the room.
