Whilst studying for his master’s degree in architecture, Mark became interested in how artificial light enhances a structure and/or an environment. From the inception of a building, he sees lighting, both natural and artificial, as essential for well-being. Through the quality of subtlety, he achieves sophistication.
Mark decided to further his studies in the field of lighting design at the BHA School of Light in Cape Town, South Africa. From there, he joined a lighting consultancy as a team leader on contracts in the residential market, working on restaurants, homes, landscapes, a wine estate, and its hotel, among others. He effectively used lighting to create atmospheres that enhance hospitality and home life.
He enjoys lighting design and collaborating to reach the most informed design decisions. His favourite part of any project is bringing the ephemeral to life.
Mark is drawn to the delicate interplay between form, structure, and light: playing with light and dark to make them dance. His dream would have been to work on architect Ricardo Bofill’s WW1-era cement factory conversion project in Spain – La Fábrica, a heritage project that transformed a brutalist industrial design into a post-modern romantic marvel.
He is inspired by architecture, the outdoors, and nature. Captivated by Europe and the diverse beauty of its cityscapes, he delights in learning from different cultural responses to light. Mark’s relocation to our London office couldn’t be more befitting, and we hope it will prove informative to his practice.
